Root Canal FAQs | Virginia Beach VA
What are the symptoms that I may need a root canal?
- Persistent, throbbing tooth pain or pain that radiates to the jaw, cheek, or ear.
- Sensitivity to hot or cold with lingering pain after exposure to hot or cold foods or drinks.
- Pain when chewing or biting down.
- Inflamed or tender gums around the tooth or a “pimple” on the gums (an abscess)
- A darkened tooth, usually black or grey.
- A cracked or chipped tooth allowing bacteria to reach the pulp.
- A damaged dental crown.
Do root canals hurt?
The root canal procedure does not hurt because the area is numbed and, if you have dental anxiety, we can provide sedation for your comfort. Once your root canal is complete, any pain from the infection or damage to the pulp is relieved. You may have mild tenderness for a few days after the procedure, but most patients are amazed by how much better they feel immediately after a root canal.

When is a root canal necessary?
Any time the tooth pulp is damaged or infected.
How long does it take to recover from a root canal?
For the first few days, you will experience some tenderness and should avoid chewing on that side until a permanent crown is placed over the tooth, which may take up to a week. However, most patients return to their normal activities within 24 hours.
Can I return to work the same day after a root canal?
Yes, if you feel up to it and have a light-duty or desk job. If your work is strenuous or involves heavy lifting, you should take the day off. Some people experience more tenderness than others, so make the decision based on your level of comfort and do not overdo it.
How much does a root canal cost in Virginia Beach?
It depends on the size of the tooth, the complexity of the root canals, the type of anesthesia used, and other factors. At your first appointment, we will provide you with an accurate estimate of the cost so there are no surprises. We accept most major credit cards, various electronic payment options, and CareCredit, a low- or no-interest credit plan for dental and medical care that you can apply for on our website.
Does dental insurance cover root canal therapy?
In most cases, dental insurance will cover all or part of the cost of root canal therapy. Our staff will assist you in submitting insurance paperwork and help you determine your coverage limits and any deductibles or copays.
What is the difference between a root canal and a retreatment?
A root canal is the procedure for removing the pulp from a damaged or diseased tooth, thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the canals, filling them with gutta-percha, and sealing the tooth closed.
Retreatment is a similar treatment performed when an original root canal has, for some reason, failed, allowing recontamination or reinfection of the root canals. During retreatment, the tooth is reopened, the gutta-percha removed, and the canals cleaned and disinfected again. Retreatment is often successful and allows the patient to avoid endodontic surgery.
Why should I see an endodontist instead of a general dentist for a root canal?
The internal structure of the tooth and its root system is complex. Endodontists have 2 to 3 years of additional training beyond dental school, focusing on pain relief, the diagnosis and treatment of dental pulp conditions, and the preservation of damaged teeth.
Dr. Meares and Dr. Becker are endodontists in Virginia Beach experienced in treating the most complex endodontic problems. Their practice near Chesapeake focuses solely on root canals and other endodontic procedures, whereas a general dentist may rarely perform them and may not be familiar with the latest techniques. General dentists are not as adept at using the advanced tools and technologies required for effective, efficient root canal therapy.

Is it normal to have pain after a root canal?
